Souvlaki is one of those Greek dishes that everyone falls in love with at first bite. It’s simple, packed with flavor, and perfect for eating on the go or as part of a leisurely feast. This is the classic grilled pork or chicken on skewers.
Tender pieces of pork or succulent chicken breast, marinated in olive oil, lemon, and herbs, then skewered with onion and pepper before being grilled to smoky perfection. Whether you enjoy it straight off the skewer or wrapped in warm pita with a generous dollop of tzatziki, souvlaki is a taste of Greek summer—wherever you are!
For pork souvlaki, always try to use top quality port free of fat and gristle.
350g pork tenderloin, or chicken breast cut into 2cm (one inch) cubes
2 tbsp Olive Oil
1 medium onion, cut into 2cm (one inch) cubes
1 green pepper, cut into 2cm (one inch) cubes
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
3 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 teaspoon dried oregano
In a large bowl, mix together lemon juice, olive oil, wine vinegar, oregano, and garlic. Add the pork or chicken (or both), onions, and green peppers, and stir to coat. Cover, and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours.
Preheat grill for medium-high heat. Thread meat, peppers, and onions onto skewers. Lightly oil a roasting tin. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes turning skewers frequently for even cooking.
Serve with a green salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice.
