The History of Archanes

Archanes has been settled for over 5,000 years, since the Minoan period. Excavations around the town have uncovered 3 important Minoan sites:

• Fourni Necropolis: a large Minoan cemetery that shows how the Minoans buried their dead.
• Anemospilia Sanctuary: a Minoan temple on the slopes of Giouchtas, where excavators found evidence that has been read as a human sacrifice.
• Vathypetro: a Minoan villa south of Archanes with ancient wine and olive oil presses.

Visits to these sites need some planning. The Greek Ministry of Culture's Odysseus listing for Fourni (checked October 2026) says Fourni opens by arrangement with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion, between 08:30 and 15:30, and is closed on Tuesdays. The Odysseus listing for Anemospilia says it is also visited by arrangement with the Ephorate (not on Tuesdays), and the listing for Vathypetro shows the site as closed.
